WorkEqual brief Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality
In October 2022, WorkEqual representatives appeared before the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality on pay and workplace conditions for women.
WorkEqual were invited before the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality on Thursday, 6th October.
WorkEqual founder Sonya Lennon and WorkEqual CEO Angela Smith outlined to members how career progression – and associated factors, such as job security and earning power – is hampered by caring duties, with women much more impacted than men.
We also outlined the importance of building public understanding of the causes of the gender pay gap to ensure support for the Gender Pay Gap Information Act.
The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality was established to consider the recommendations contained in the Report of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality. The meeting focused on Recommendations 32 to 36 of the Citizens’ Assembly’s report, which relate to pay and workplace conditions.

Interested in finding out more about what we campaign for? We advocate for gender equality in Irish workplaces. In 2022, the Gender Pay Gap Information Act, legislation compelling employers in Ireland to disclose their gender pay gaps, came into operation. This was a major success for WorkEqual after five years of campaigning. Check out our campaigns page to find out more.
